2015: a year without shopping

That's right. My goal for 2015 is to not buy one piece of clothing for myself.

Let me explain to you why and how I got to thinking about the crazy concept...

The beginning of the month Sam and I wrote down our goals. The first set of goals we wrote down was 1.a goal for me, 2.a goal for him, 3.a goal for the both of us and 4.an anti-resolution for both of us(which is basically a goal where you choose to NOT do something. Ex. I choose not to drink soda.). This set is goals we want to achieve by the end of the month. We made the rule that if you don't accomplish the goal, then it rolls over to the next month on top of your new goal for the new month. The second set of goals was 4 things for both of us to achieve together by the end of the year.

The goal I set for myself to finish by the end of January was: I will not spend money on one piece of clothing.

Any girl who is normal, likes to shop. So you might read that and think 'What the heck?! You're kiddin me!! Yeah right!'

But here's the thing. It's so do-able if you think about it. Four weeks. That's it. Of just not spending money on clothes. I made the goal mostly to just save money cause Sam and I will be moving into an apartment within the next two months and we all know moving requires $$$$$$$$$.

So then that week I got to thinking and I had the thought, that would be crazy if someone went a WHOLE year without buying clothes. I remember a while back watching the Today show and there was a gal who did it last year...So I know it's possible and CAN be done.

Then I was thinking about all the reasons why I can easily accomplish the task for a whole year:
- I already have enough clothes for each season to survive and still be in style
- I will be saving so much money
- I will have holidays and my birthday where there is a chance of people giving me a new outfit
- I have so many clothes that I have bought in the past but just don't wear for whatever reason so those are practically new anyway
- It will create better shopping/spending patterns for me in the future

So in a some odd, twisted way I convinced myself that I can do it. 12 months of not buying clothes. I wrote it down. And we all know once a goal is written down there is no going back.... because you've gotta see it get crossed off at some point.

I decided to set some rules:
1. Shoes are not clothes.
2. Jewelry is not clothes.
3. Gift cards are not my own personal cash. If I recieve gift cards and choose to spend them on a new outfit then that is acceptable.
4. Underwear should always be in good condition. If I have a pair that needs to be replaced then please do.

I have already worn a few tops this month that I never chose as my first option of something to wear, and actually felt very confident wearing them! Figures, I mean come on, I was the one who bought the article in the first place. I think that it is going to be so fun to go through and find those pieces of clothing that hide under all my more commonly worn outfits and make them work.

All I can think of at this point is... Oh gosh, what have I gotten myself into.

  1. This is the best! O my you are so funny.. I am proud of you, and this makes me want to try! Totes doable. If I do it I will need monthly (at least) encouragement texts from you. Glad you can still buy shoes, jewelry, and maybe should we say purses to?
