K9 companion

Today I blog about our dog. Yes, our dog.

Sam and I got our sweet Saint Bernard, Montee in March. Our lives have changed immensely since. We finally got moved into our new apartment and it has been SO great to have our own 'nest'. I LOVE Riverside, and the area we are in (Canyon Crest) reminds me a lot of Rocklin. It's very developed with big, full, green trees everywhere. And we love the people we are at church with now as well! It has been a great move for us and hope to be located here while raising a family.

It's funny cause on our very first date Sam and I talked about dogs for more then half of it. Ha! We passed a husky and I stopped to greet and pet him and then we got talking. I remember thinking, this guy knows what's up. I had a small thought that if things worked out for us then he would get me a dog and that's a win for sure ;) Sam is a dog freak! He has this App on his phone he is like always on. Literally, I can count on him 70% of the time on this App. It's called 'perfect dog' and it's basically a dog dictionary on steroids. It has every official AKC dog breed and info, pics, size info, etc about the breed. He just spends hours looking at all the different breeds and what each one is about and their history. He has even paid extra to upgrade to the so called 'better version.'

So fast forward to us signing papers for moving into the apartment, I was curious and asked what the rule is for having a dog in your appt. She told us, "20 pound limit and you have to pay a $100 dollar deposit and an extra $50/month for rent" So I pretty much put it out of the question because we have talked about dogs so many times and we know we only want big breed dogs. The small ones yapp too much. But then, of course a month later I had the thought that maybe we just look into a small breed to have for the first couple of years of us being in the apartment and then once we get a house, get a big dog as well. (We also are big believers in having two dogs because it's better for the dogs to have a K9 friend around when we are not home)

So I bring it up to Sam and suggest we just get a small guy and create train him for when we are at work. At first, he was giving me reasons why we shouldn't and how it just would be too hard. But I know him, and I knew if I kept bringing it up...he would break. One week later, we found our selves at the pound just looking to see if we would find a dog that could be the right fit for us. We came home empty handed.

After doing research, we narrowed it down to a few different breeds: French Bulldog, Jack Russel Terrior, Schnauzer, or Pug. They are all adventurous enough to go out and do fun things with us. Sam was always on Craigslist hoping to find something. Till one night we were watching tv and he was on Craiglist looking and came across someone who was selling purebred St. Bernard's--200$ !!!!!! That is seriously unheard of! If your planning on getting a Saint then you better plan on paying 1,000-2,000$. He showed me the pictures and my heart melted. He has always wanted a Saint and was in shock. So I was like "okay just txt them and see if it's actually true and not a scam or something". Sure enough, they sent us pictures of the Mom(150lbs) and the Dad(180lbs) and they told us they only had 2 puppies left out of a litter of 8. So Sam was like okay, I'll just go by tomorrow to look at them and see how I feel about it.

I was sooooo nervous the next day. I could barley think straight. I kept going back and forth on it and was scared mostly cause I've never had a dog before.

Then I get this picture sent to me....

He did it. Sam got us a puppy. I was just so happy to get home. Everyone was asking us how we were gonna do it in an apartment. And I just kept thinking, good question lol. The first couple weeks we didn't get much sleep, and I was scrubbing pee out of the carpet every couple hours.

I have always heard people compare their dogs to children and I've always thought it's a little crazy when they say it. I would always think that's kinda a stretch cause they are nothing like people. But guess what, I totally get it now. To an extent, yes, there is no way you can compare dogs to children but yet in so many ways you can! Lol

Sometimes I'm just like driving in the car or at work or something and I get emotional even thinking about how much I love I have for Montee.

I mean, come on...look at him. He is perfect and he is my bud. I love him and tell him everyday.

Sam's parents are dog people and love Montee like crazy, so they told us we can bring him over to their place to be in the yard while we are both at work. So Sam drops him off at his personal doggy day care and I go pick him up on my way home from work.

But the apartment only lasted for so long...someone called the office and told them there is a Saint Bernard living in appt 113. The office told us that we couldn't have him there anymore. The day we got the phone call I cried all morning. The thought of having to send him to live with someone else made me so so sad. He is my baby boy and I don't wanna come home to him not being there.

It was a hard decision to make, but we decided to move in with Sam's parents. And them being the awesome people that they are have let us move in with open arms! Patty even let me hang up frames and decorate the room we are staying in. I feel such at home when we are there and I get to come home to my Montee (and Sam) everyday. What a blessing. We are going to be able to save a lot of money living with them. The goal is to be there for a few months and then find a house (in Canyon Crest) where we can have a yard for Montee and another doggy brother/sister. And eventually grow into with our people children :)

I love our little family and I am so thankful that we have found Montee. He has taught us a lot and we are learning how to care for something together. It's a great time in our lives and continue to grow closer to each other everyday!
